Salesforce Householding Gets an Upgrade

For most nonprofits, a constituent doesn’t exist in isolation.
Donors may give as a couple. Families might participate in programs together. Multiple people can live within the same home.
That’s where householding comes in. Householding in Nonprofit Cloud groups related individuals, such as family members or people living at the same address, under a single household account. The feature makes it possible for organizations to manage things like financial contributions and program involvement at both the individual and household level.
With Salesforce’s Winter ’27 release, householding is getting an upgrade. The new functionality makes creating, naming, and managing households simpler and more automated. Once the release goes live, Nonprofit Cloud users can take advantage of the new features across the entire platform for better constituent visibility and more streamlined processes.
What’s Changing With Householding?
The Winter ’27 improvements introduce new setup options for household automation, household naming, and household creation. Together, they give organizations more control over how households are built while reducing some of the manual work required to keep them current.
Automate Household Creation
Organizations can opt into different entry points that allow Nonprofit Cloud to automatically create household-related records. Admins can also enable automatic household creation and select the record type used for auto-generated household records.
That automation can extend to information nonprofits already collect. For example, when entering a new donor mailing address, a user can choose to automatically create a household and have that address copied to the household account’s billing address.
Less duplicate entry means staff spend less time maintaining records and have greater confidence that household information is accurate and up to date.
Create Household Names Your Way
Household naming is also significantly more flexible.
Organizations can select from more than a dozen ready-made naming patterns or build their own format based on stored information. Users can create greetings and household names using templates that draw from custom fields, including formula fields. They can also incorporate multiple fields for uses such as mail merges. The “Check Syntax” button looks for errors before putting a custom configuration into place.
Organizations can also set conjunctions, determine how many household members should be included in a naming pattern, and establish exclusions. For example, Nonprofit Cloud can automatically exclude someone with a deceased date from a household naming template, and nonprofits can create additional custom exclusions based on their unique needs.
Once set up, users can send emails or letters with greetings like “Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jones,” “Hello Sam and Sally,” or even “Welcome aboard Mr. and Mrs. Jones and family.” Multiple templates can be associated for various uses.
Make Household Management Easier
A new household wizard provides a simpler route for creating households. Once enabled, users see a new household option, replacing the previous new group option. A new household naming sequence lets users set the order for individual contacts when they appear in an automatically generated household account name or greeting.
As members are added, updated, or removed, the household automatically recalculates using the latest information based on the setup rules. Users can also opt specific accounts, such as high-touch donors, out of automatic household naming when needed.
Why Is This an Important Upgrade for Nonprofits?
Good household data influences fundraising communications, acknowledgments, donor history, mailing lists, program participation, and the overall picture an organization has of the people it serves. When staff have to manually create households, update addresses, or correct household names, small data-management tasks can quickly add up and take time away from higher-value work.
The Winter ’27 improvements make householding more configurable and automated. Nonprofits can establish the rules that fit the way they work and let Nonprofit Cloud handle more of the repetitive maintenance behind the scenes.
That means:
- Less manual data entry when creating and updating households.
- More consistent names and greetings across communications and mail merges.
- Cleaner records as household membership changes over time.
- More flexibility to accommodate exceptions and exclusions.
- A better household-level view of constituent relationships, giving staff stronger context for fundraising and program engagement.
Salesforce has also indicated that additional householding improvements are ahead, including enhancements to household member search and reporting.
Put Householding to Work
The best householding setup is the one configured around how your nonprofit manages constituents, relationships, and communications. The new Winter ’27 functionality gives organizations more options to do that. If you’re new to householding or want to take advantage of the upgrade, Galvin can help you put the feature to work. The real value of householding is having Salesforce reflect the way your constituents live, give, and engage with your organization.
